Reggaeton – an energetic dance style for beginners and experienced dancers!

Reggaeton is a fast-paced and engaging dance style that has captivated dance schools and clubs around the world . It is equally suitable for adults entering the dance hall for the first time as well as experienced enthusiasts who want to deepen their movement language and add a new kind of rhythmic power and attitude to their repertoire.

Reggaeton is a bridge genre – it combines the first steps of a beginner and the deeper dance skills of an enthusiast into the same energetic whole. In a dance class, everyone finds their own challenges: one practices their first body roll, another hones rhythmic precision or adds their own attitude to the choreography.

Now we will introduce where reggaeton comes from, what kind of dance style it is, what benefits it offers to a beginner dancer, how it compares to other styles (such as commercial, twerk, heels and hip hop), and why reggaeton is a great enhancer of dance skills and at the same time a springboard to other dance styles.

History and cultural background

Reggaeton originated in the early 1990s in Latin America’s youth underground culture and became mainstream by the end of the decade. The genre originated in Panama as “reggae en español” and further developed in Puerto Rico, where Jamaican dancehall and reggae were combined with local Latin rhythms (such as bomba and plena) and hip hop influences. The result was a unique urban fusion characterized by a strong dembow rhythm – a steady, catchy drum pattern that forces your feet to move.

At first, reggaeton remained underground and even met with disapproval due to its bold lyrics and dance moves. Gradually, however, it grew into a huge phenomenon: in the early 2000s, reggaeton rose to the top of charts around the world, for example with Daddy Yankee's hit "Gasolina". Today, reggaeton is one of the most popular forms of club music and dance in Latin America - and also in Finland.

In Cuba in particular, reggaeton has spread to the streets as a street dance, which is danced spontaneously to the music of local reggaeton artists. Reggaeton's popularity is fueled by its cultural richness: the dance style is deeply rooted in Latin culture and draws influences from dancehall, hip hop, and traditional Latin dances (such as salsa and merengue). The passion and energy of the dance come from the fusion of these cultures - reggaeton simultaneously embodies the joys, sorrows, love, and celebration of life, which creates a sense of community among the dancers.

What is reggaeton as a dance?

Music and rhythm: Reggaeton has a fast and powerful rhythm that encourages you to move your body. The background dembow rhythm (originating from dancehall) is catchy and repetitive, making it easy for even beginners to keep up. The music is usually Spanish-language rap and vocals combined with heavy drums and EDM-style tones – “think Spanish hip hop,” as one dance school describes it. Reggaeton songs often start slowly and build up in intensity in the chorus, which is also reflected in the dynamics of the dance: sometimes the movement is soft and lingering, sometimes it is punchy and sharp, according to the rhythm.

Movements and expression: Reggaeton dance loads the entire body – especially the chest, core and hips are used a lot. Typical movements include various body isolations, such as chest and hip “pumps” and body rolls, fast sharp accents and fluid footwork. Often the dance position is slightly flexible at the knees and the center of gravity is low, which brings a relaxed bounce to the movements and gives space to the hips.

Reggaeton is also characterized by a sensual body language: the dance makes extensive use of hip-swaying and rhythmic “shaking,” which in Latin is called the perreo style. Perreo is a grind-like movement danced as a couple, where one of the dancers is behind the other – in practice, it is reggaeton’s version of twerking. In modern reggaeton classes, perreo and other hip movements can also be done solo, and they bring a bold, strong expression to the dance.

Style and Attitude: Reggaeton emphasizes a free, confident attitude and finding your own style. The dance style is relaxed but powerful – a mix of street credibility and Latino-style joy. Dancers are encouraged to “let loose” and feel the music in their bodies.

One of the great things about reggaeton is that the movement is not too rigid or regulated: everyone is allowed to express their own personality . There is a lot of room for your own groove and facial expressions in the movement sequences – attitude is often as important as the step patterns themselves. Reggaeton has been described as a raw form of bold self-expression that stems from urban culture and identity. The dance can be playful and “cheeky” as well as powerfully emotional. It is this combination – energetic rhythm, sensual movements and a relaxed, fun-loving attitude – that makes reggaeton an easily approachable but still truly rewarding dance genre, even for beginners.

Reggaeton for an experienced dancer?

Reggaeton challenges you to use your body in a new way. It brings hip-hop dancers more hip mobility and body differentiation, heels enthusiasts bold sensuality and strength without heels, commercial dancers authentic Latin groove, and twerkers a wider range of moves that combine booty shakes with full-body choreography.

Reggaeton adds a new rhythmic layer and develops body isolations that can be applied to other styles. It teaches you to combine precise technique with a free attitude, making the dance even more multidimensional.

In short, for example, reggaeton offers Latin twists to those with a hip hop background, comprehensive danceability to those with a twerk background, and a genuine "Latin flavor" to commercial enthusiasts, which many choreographers bring to music videos and stage shows.

The benefits of reggaeton for beginners

Starting to dance reggaeton offers a variety of benefits for physical fitness, mental well-being, and dance skills. Here are the main benefits for an adult beginner:

  • Physical fitness: Reggaeton is an effective full-body workout. Fast-paced movements raise your heart rate and improve aerobic endurance – in practice, you will sweat without even noticing, like an endurance workout. Continuous movement from one song to another burns calories and improves fitness while having fun. Dancing also develops muscle strength: especially the legs and core become stronger when you squat to the rhythm and support your body in various isolations. The versatile use of the hips, chest and shoulders improves mobility and develops coordination and body control. Reggaeton has been said to provide a full-body workout without a gym – mobility increases, posture can improve and your step becomes lighter even in everyday life.
  • Mental well-being: Dancing is known to be an effective mood lifter, and reggaeton offers the perfect package for this. Intense music and movement carry you along, which relieves everyday stress – at the end of the class you often feel relaxed and happily energetic. A reggaeton class also gives you self-confidence: the sport encourages you to throw yourself into it and take your own space, and learning each new move brings a little pride. The skills you gain in small steps increase the dancer's self-confidence, which is also reflected positively in everyday life – the body and mind learn that even new challenges can be overcome. Sensual movements practiced in front of the dance hall mirror can strengthen your body image and encourage you to express yourself freely. In addition, working together to the beat of music is a great mood booster: fast-paced Latin rhythms inevitably bring a smile to your face and endorphins surge. Many experience euphoria after the class – the joy of dancing is the best pick-me-up after a long day at work.
  • Skill development: Reggaeton offers beginners an excellent foundation for learning dance technique in a fun way. With the sport, your sense of rhythm develops quickly, as the repetitive dembow beat is easy to recognize and you learn to move naturally to it. At the same time, your whole-body coordination improves: the movements you learn involve a lot of body differentiation (for example, rotating your hips separately from your upper body), which challenges your brain and muscles to work together. Isolations that may seem difficult at first become smoother with practice, and this development of body control is beneficial in all exercise. Your memory and concentration also get a workout when you learn step sequences and combine movements with music. In dance classes, you often learn short choreographies, so you get used to visualizing movement sequences one after the other – this is a great brain workout! Reggaeton also encourages creativity and finding your own style: because there are no strict rules, you learn to express yourself through movement. This ability to express yourself – the courage to throw yourself into the music – is a valuable skill that transcends the boundaries of dance styles. It is no exaggeration to say that reggaeton classes provide more than just dance steps: they give you a sense of rhythm, confidence and joy, and help you move more freely and enjoy music in a new way.

Comparison: reggaeton and other dance styles from a beginner's perspective

Many adult beginners wonder how reggaeton compares to other popular street and club dance styles. The following compares how reggaeton differs from (or supports) commercial, twerk, heels, and hip hop – especially in aspects that are relevant to beginners.

COMMERCIAL

Commercial dance usually refers to flashy music video-style choreographies to pop and R&B hits. It utilizes elements from many genres (hip hop, jazz funk, sometimes Latin), and the style focuses on showmanship. Reggaeton differs from commercial style in that it is more clearly limited to a specific music genre: the class plays reggaeton songs with a consistent Latin rhythm, while in commercial classes the songs and movements can vary from one side to the other. For beginners, reggaeton can be easier because the typical movement expression for one class is more consistent - you learn a specific groove that carries from one song to the next. Commercial choreographies, on the other hand, may vary in style more, which is exciting but may require a little more mastery at first. On the other hand, the attitude-type performance elements and body use learned in reggaeton (e.g. body waves and blows to the rhythm) are of great benefit in commercial dance. Many commercial choreographers use reggaeton spices when the song has Latin influences. You can think of reggaeton as teaching you one strong style, while commercial combines many – a strong foundation in reggaeton makes it more natural to try commercial later.

MORE EXPERIENCED DANCER: If you've already mastered the showmanship of commercials, reggaeton will bring earthy groove and Latin power to your movement language.

TWEK

Twerking is a dance style that focuses mainly on spectacular hip and butt shaking movements. In a twerk class, you practice various techniques to get your hips and lower back moving quickly in a controlled manner – often even while lying on the floor or squatting. Reggaeton and twerk share a common movement language: hip isolation. In fact, reggaeton’s own perreo dance is very close to twerk concepts – the Spanish Royal Academy defined perreo as “a dance that is usually danced to the rhythm of reggaeton with erotic hip movements… practically twerking”. However, there are differences. While twerk is almost entirely focused on “booty bounce” and can seem even daringly one-sided to a beginner, reggaeton dance combines hip movements with full-body dance: steps, hand movements, chest isolations and other variations are included with the music. This makes shaking in a reggaeton class seem like a natural part of the larger choreography – you might not even notice that you are “twerking” because you are feeling the whole dance! For a beginner, reggaeton can be a more relaxed way to approach hip movements, because the atmosphere is more of a “party on the dance floor” than a technical workout. Once you have learned to use your hips rhythmically in reggaeton, it is easy to deepen your skills with special twerk classes if you wish. Reggaeton gives you the foundation: body control in the core, understanding of rhythm and the confidence to move boldly – all of these are helpful if you decide to enter the world of twerking.

HEELS

Heels classes, as the name suggests, are danced in high heels, and the style focuses on a feminine, strong movement language. The heels style draws heavily from commercial and jazz funk – movements are often performed to pop or R&B music and emphasize showiness, alignment and, of course, walking and posing in heels. The biggest hurdle for beginners in heels is often the heels themselves: mastering balance and technique is more demanding in heels. In this sense, reggaeton is an excellent preparatory sport before moving on to heels. Reggaeton is typically danced in sneakers or low-heeled shoes, which frees you to focus on the movements themselves instead of just standing up. In reggaeton, you learn to use your hips and chest heavily and to move confidently – the same elements are repeated in heels choreographies, albeit with a more sophisticated twist. Once you have gained basic confidence in using your body and performing through reggaeton, it is easier to focus on the additional challenge that heels bring in heels. Reggaeton also builds leg strength and core support, which are very helpful when dancing in high heels. Many moves, such as body rolls or quick steps, feel more stable when your muscles are already used to working with reggaeton. Heels dancing has its own special vibe – sensual elegance – but ultimately it’s confidence and attitude that matter. These are the two things reggaeton teaches you so well. So you can think of reggaeton as learning body control and attitude first, and when you add high heels to that, you’re ready to shine!

MORE EXPERIENCED DANCER : If you have danced in heels, through reggaeton you will learn to control your body more freely even without heels.

HIP-HOP

Hip hop dance is a broad genre of street dance that includes many subgenres, but in general it has a lot of groove, body flexibility and emphasis on rhythm – in this sense it is very similar to reggaeton. It is not surprising that reggaeton is originally Latin-influenced hip hop: the dance structure of reggaeton is similar to hip hop, with solo choreography, but the music is a combination of Latin rhythms and Caribbean dancehall. One descriptive characterization is: “Reggaeton is like hip hop with Spanish spices”. From a beginner’s perspective, reggaeton and hip hop strongly support each other. If you have already tried hip hop, you will notice a lot of familiarity in a reggaeton class: bounce, body solos, attitude moves and learning 8-count movement sequences are present in both genres. On the other hand, if you start with reggaeton, you will develop great rhythm and body response to the music, which is a big advantage over hip hop. Reggaeton music is usually a bit more straightforward in its rhythm, which can make it easier for beginners to keep up with the beat than some hip hop songs with syncopated rhythms. In this way, reggaeton acts as a kind of bridge builder: you will learn the basic concepts of street dancing in a happy Latin-tinged environment, and you can later expand your repertoire to different styles of hip hop with much more confidence. Both genres are about expressing your own style and “catching” the rhythm with your body – this is a skill that reggaeton is a great place to start.

MORE EXPERIENCED DANCER: If you are a hip hop enthusiast, reggaeton provides extra spice and rhythmic variations

Why is reggaeton a good starting genre – and a springboard to other dances?

Reggaeton uniquely combines easy approachability with a wealth of dance techniques. This makes it an ideal beginner's genre, especially for adults who may be a little nervous when they first enter the dance hall. Most reggaeton classes have a warm, encouraging atmosphere: you can join without a partner and without previous experience, and everyone can progress at their own pace. Teachers strive to go through the basics clearly – starting with easy steps and clapping to the rhythm, for example – and gradually add movements such as hand movements and body rotations as skills develop. The vibe of the class is often "having fun together" and no one is afraid of making mistakes; the dance hall is a safe space to try and make mistakes. Many are surprised at how quickly the excitement disappears with reggaeton and a good Reggaeton teacher: when the music is blaring and you see people of all ages around you practicing with smiles on their faces, you can't help but get involved.

  • For the enthusiast : a deepener of body control, movement and expression, which brings a new rhythmic element to the repertoire

Reggaeton is a great example of “ low-threshold, high-feeling ” dance.

After just a few hours, you will start to recognize certain points and beats in the music that you can perform a certain movement to – whether it is a hip tilt, a step to the side or a flexion of the arms. You will notice that you are dancing! This experience of success will hook you and encourage you to continue your dance hobby. The basics learned through reggaeton form a strong foundation from which it is easy to push forward. When your sense of rhythm, body control and self-confidence have been awakened through reggaeton, starting other dance styles will feel much more natural.

For example :

  • You may be excited to try a hip hop class and find that you can already naturally groove and follow the instructor's eight counts - you'll be able to focus on the nuances of a new style once you have the basic technique down.
  • When you first go to a twerk class, you already have the hip movements from reggaeton in your “muscle memory,” so the specific techniques of twerking will open up faster. Your confidence will also have grown, so you won’t be shy about throwing yourself into the moves.
  • If the prospect of a heels course makes you think twice, thanks to reggaeton you are already familiar with the movement of your body – dancing in high heels requires practice, of course, but the courage to move femininely and spectacularly has already been ignited during reggaeton classes.
  • In commercial classes, you may find that you recognize some of the moves or stances because the teachers may use the same elements (e.g. body rolls or quick accents to the beat) that you have practiced in reggaeton. This will help you pick up the choreography faster and also fully enjoy the new styles.

Reggaeton serves as an excellent springboard for many directions in the dance world!

It contains influences from several dance genres – the movements can include, for example, the hip movement of salsa, the punchiness of dancehall, the body movement of Afro-dances or the groove of hip hop. Once you master the basics of reggaeton, you have a dictionary full of movements and rhythms that you can apply to other genres. At the same time, reggaeton ignites the desire to learn more in many dancers: you may find yourself wanting to try, for example, paresalsa, once you have become familiar with the Latin rhythms. On the other hand, some hip hop dancers turn to reggaeton to bring a new twist to their dance – the learning goes both ways.

Above all, reggaeton teaches that dance belongs to everyone – regardless of age or background. For an adult beginner, the threshold for entering a dance studio is lowered when the genre is relaxed, the music is catchy and the atmosphere is encouraging. Many who have started with reggaeton have said that they were surprised at how quickly they develop and how much energy and joy the classes bring to everyday life. This enthusiasm carries them forward: once the basic dance skills and self-confidence have been built, the doors are open to anything – you can continue with reggaeton to increasingly demanding patterns or expand your repertoire to new dance genres. The most important thing is that the first step has been taken and the spark of dance has been ignited.

👉 The bottom line: Reggaeton is not just a "party genre for beginners" - it is a developing, energetic and versatile tool also for those who want to develop as dancers and shine even more in other genres.
